Great Scope
I bought this for the scope. The clarity is great. The sun was setting behind my target and I still could see clearly with no glare. crosshairs are very sharp as well. Did not drop my zero on my .223 rifle.

Not so great transcriber
I’ve been transcribing with an Olympus for six years. I needed another machine, so I bought the Sony M-2000…not a great product for the money. Even if you have the volume turned all the way up to 10 (highest), you can’t hear the person very well and there’s a muffled quality, even with the tone on high. I can’t believe the difference in the quality of sound between the two. I’m disappointed with the Sony, and I actually bought it because I thought Sony would be better! Ha!

Two things I’m not happy with:

Every time the peddle is depressed there is a very loud clicking sound from the machine which is very annoying–sometimes having to backup again and relisten to what was being said.

The other one is…even with the volume turned up at its highest, if the person dictating does not talk directly into their recorder, then it can be very difficult hearing them. My old machine would pick it up much better when the volume was turned up and 95% of the time would be able to figure out what was being dictated.

I rated it a four as no problem if dictator talks into their recorder other than the clicking of the peddle.

My girlfriend just loves it
I purchased this for my girlfriend for her birthday because she is completing her masters and needs it to transcribe interviews she’s done for her thesis. She was previously using an older model and has fallen in love with this one, so far she is getting the job done twice as fast at a better quality

My children have all the other preschool prepco videos and when they entered preschool they were far ahead. I fair added these for reading readiness and it’s paid off already, my son fair entered Kindergarten and even though he’s PDD he’s reading at level and above. These Rock!!!

I am a teacher and I idea the belief of these videos sounded righteous. I got “Meet the View Words” for my 4 year broken-down and the numbers video for a 2 year venerable. They wail if I attach them on. They say they are for babies, and plain. I have had grand success with the Leap Frog videos, as well as Word World. I judge pre-school prepco products are for the very young, as in under 2 years primitive.

Ok, at a bargain price
Ok, consider that I paid about $300 for mine, it’s my #3 high-def camcorder, and I know what I’m doing… this is not a model for beginners. But I don’t think a beginner should be using any of the AVCHD models yet.. the format is too new.

This was not really the case with HDV, simply because MPEG-2 was a done deal long before HDV came along.. so the first cameras that came out were pretty good, and where improvements were made, it was in the general HD area, not the encoding format so much. AVC (also called MPEG-4 part 10, also called H.264) is generally heralded as the successor to MPEG-2, but it’s way more complex. Encoding on a PC or other dedicated hardware looks great, but you’re probably spending 3-6 hours per hour of HD video to do that encoding. Crunching this down to a small battery-powered camcorder and maintaining that quality is a work-in-progress.

THE BAD

Yeah, BD-R and BD-RE in 8cm size are expensive. But if you think of the BD-RE as a replacement for an SD card (they hold about 7.5GB), they make a little more sense… you record on it, copy the video off to another device, then erase it, just as a flash card. Eventually, BD-R will be cheap enough to compare to tape, but that’s a ways off.

Quality-wise, it’s mixed. This one is pretty awful on low-light shooting. It’s a given that virtually every HD camcorder is going to be worse in low light than a similar SD model… they’re only starting to deliver a few with decent low-light performance in the prosumer price ranges (new Canon and Pannys, about $1300). But this one’s oddly worse than you’d expect, given the decent performance in good light, and the large enough single sensor.

THE CONFUSING (for some)

If you’re not already doing Blu-Ray, this may be a pain. Windows don’t natively understand the Blu-Ray file format (it’s a new version of the UDF file system used on DVD), so you need to install the Hitachi software. Hitachi, like most CE companies, is clueless about software support, but in truth, editing video isn’t their job. If, like me, you already have Blu-Ray support in place in your video toolchain, dealing with this format is a no-brainer.

THE GOOD

Tapeless rocks, when you’re in a hurry. However, AVCHD on DVD is a horrible idea — it’s nowhere near enough storage… you’ll get about 20 minutes. Blu-Ray is the right answer for tapeless HD using a 8cm disc. I’m using this one mainly for quick stuff… to offload my way more expensive cameras when quality isn’t THAT critical.

As for quality… it’s a mixed bag. In the sunlight, this camera delivers a decent enough HD image. Like any first-generation AVCHD camcorder, you’re not going to match HDV quality on fact motion — there will be more artifacts. Given this is an older model, of course, factor that in on what you’re paying.

I didn’t mind the user interface at all.. it’s fairly simplistic, as you’d expect on a consumer model. The one quirk, if your used to tape, is the control for selecting clips to play back… it’s a very non-obvious button. I missed it, first time out… guess I should have RTFMed, but hey, where’s the fun in that.

Another plus… this model will shoot SD on DVD-R or DVD-RAM, which is rather usual these days; most AVCHD/tapeless models are HD-only. You don’t get the choice… it’s HD on BD, SD on DVD.

The body and styling is kind of nice.. a bit weird, but it grows on you. It has a covered, full-sized cold shoe, and works great with an external mic like an Azden SMX-10. You could obviously use any 3.5mm plug mono or stereo mic (far as no, there’s no plug-in power, you’ll need a self-powered mic), but a larger mic could be visible in the shot, if used on-camera. I never recommend shooting with any built-in camera audio, so I can’t really tell you if it’s any good or not.

So, my bottom line: at the original $1300 or so, this was a bad camera, no question, largely based on the low light performance. Today, you can get 3rd generation AVCHD models, which do a much better job at encoding without artifacts… some of these start at around $500-$600. Unless disc is a big advantage, skip this and go with a Canon HF-200 (about $600) or a Panny HDC-SD9 (about $500) or a Sony HDR-CX7 or CX12 rather than pay the prices in the $700s or $800s for this I’ve seen around. But for the price of an SD camcorder, $300 or so, it’s not a bad unit.

Hitachi has a new model BD camcorder, which is supposedly much improved, and also records to SDHC flash cards as an alternate. If you’re looking for a better unit, that should be seeing the same kind of technology improvements as the other 3rd generation AVCHD models.

Like any bit of technology, you need to do your homework. AVCHD is new enough some video editors still don’t support it. Even when they do, it’s very CPU intensive, so don’t be surprised when your dual-core CPU is driven to its knees. Using an intermediate video format, like CineForm, Sony MXF (or other high bitrate MPEG-2 variations), isn’t a bad idea if you have a complex project. Blu-Ray media is still expensive, though it’s been falling.. you’re not being a wise consumer if you don’t bother to price consumables of any kind before buying the device that consumes them.

What a waste of money!
There is virtually no support from Hitachi on this product. You are totally on your own. There is no documentation for the software so you must be savvy enough to figure it out for yourself. The interface is extremely cumbersome and time consuming. Also, I should have looked at the price of the discs before buying this product. $25 for a one hour disc??? I wish I had never wasted my money on this camera.

WHY? HDD (HARD DISK DRIVE) PERFECT
NO reason to GO to a DVD/BD/VIDEO TAPE recorder anymore…….. If you have been following the DESKTOP ways, you know your going to get a better deal with a HARD DISK DRIVE (VIDEO RECORDER).

On your computer you don’t copy to a CD anymore, you copy to WHAT??

I don’t own this item. The only reason I bought a camcorder was for the whole purpose of not CHANGING DISKS!

GO with the JVC 20GB Everio… must be cheapier by now; and, you will get 4.5 hours ULTRA FINE quality. HD is getting over rated when it comes to recording on your personal life. (The 40 GB Everios must be more economical by now)

The Everio is compact and it has been holding strong for 3 years. Dropped it once for the first time, a week ago… Hasn’t complained yet.

I don’t record the whole Aerosmith concert. Why would I, better to enjoy it.

Recording your kid growing up in HD tv won’t make an Academy Award either… it could make Funniest Home Video Entries easier though…

Never HAVE TO CHANGE DISC! Thats the only thing to remember. SOON, SOLID STATE DRIVE (SDD).

Stop waisting money and changing discs like you change diapers on a newborn.

Fantastic value for money

Yes – those really are the only minor issues with this product. Installation is a breeze, and the kit comes with a variety of headrest adapters. I didn’t need any of them. I had the screen mounted in about 4 minutes, then spent an additional 20 minutes making a power harness to power the unit of a front power outlet. The headrest has two wiring looms coming out of the posts – one for power and AV in, and one for AV out, heading to a secondary screen. The manual doesn’t mention a single thing about how to install these, nor does it explain what kind of video formats the SD and USB ports accept.

Video quality is outstanding – much better than I had expected, plus it returns where you left off when you power it on again, something most portable players can’t do.

Audio from the unit is very low – so you’ll need to consider wiring it to an AUX-in on your radio. The IR-headphone transmitter sucks – at 10 inches away, the signal is already dying. Roadview apparently sell an external IR transmitter.

The remote is nice and large, with real buttons (instead of those poor creditcard remotes). The button layout is a little confusing, but you get used to that quickly.

At an average price of just $160, this is a steal. The headrest also features a zippered cover, and the front feels better than the original headrests in our Ford.

I received the prodcut in anticipation of a trip I was taking with my 2 year old. I needed a DVD player to pass the time and miles. The install was ok… I Googled the instructions and came up with some pretty good direction. Luckily, I did not do the full blown installation and hard-wire the power into the car. The unit did not work properly when I had it in place. It was a huge let down for me, not to mention having to uninstall it afterwards.

Product gave me a ‘NO DISK’ error, even though the disk was in.

This film is a zany, laughable, irreverent glance at the materialistic, superficial, and shallow fashion world. Seen through the eyes of the dense and singleminded male model, Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller), it slyly pokes fun at all that the fashion world holds dear.

Zoolander, a three time winner of the male model of the year award, goes up against the recent kid in town, Hansel (Owen Wilson), and great to his amazement has his crown taken from him. No longer the toast of the town and already yesterday’s news, Zoolander falls prey to the dastardly machinations of acclaimed fashion designer, Mugatu (Will Ferrell), and his unfriendly sidekick, Katinka (Milla Jovovich) .

In order to sustain Mugatu’s sweatshops running at bulky throttle, they hope to rid themselves of the prime minister of Malaysia, who is planning on abolishing child labor. An intellectual and valiant reporter, Matilda Jeffries (Christine Taylor), who is also Zoolander’s care for interest, realizes, however, that something amiss is afoot. Before you know it, bitter rivals Zoolander and Hansel are joined in battle against the forces of inferior.

This is a hilarious and laughable spoof that is clear to design the viewer rock and roll with laughter. Ben Stiller is hysterical as the dumber than humdrum Zoolander, who struggles to acquire meaning in his life after his modeling career tanks. Owen Wilson is absolutely endearing as Zoolander’s equally dense rival, Hansel. David Duchovny has a runt, but memorable, role as J.P. Prewitt, a feeble hand model. Jon Voight is droll as Larry Zoolander, Derek’s macho, coal miner father, who is mortified by his effeminate looking son and his chosen occupation.

Jerry Stiller, Ben’s trusty life father, has a pivotal role as Maury Ballstein, head of the Balls Modeling Agency, who claims to savor Zoolander as a son but sells him down river anyway, when the chips are down. Ben’s loyal life mom, Anna Meara, has a very itsy-bitsy share in the film, as does his right life sister, Amy. Cameos by celebrities who play themselves abound in this film. Glance for Donatella Versace, Winona Ryder, Billy Zane, Claudia Schiffer. Gary Shandling, “Lil Kim. Sandra Bernhard, David Bowie, Fabio, Lenny Kravitz, and Donald Trump, honest to name a few.

If you are a fan of the Saturday Night Live prove, Wrathful TV, and Comedy Central, then you will, undoubtedly, be pleased this fresh, droll, satiric, and thoroughly amusing and irreverent spoof of the Unique York fashion scene.

I can’t figure out which makes me laugh more: the loyal movie, or the review written by Roger Ebert where he climbs up on a soap box and attempts to lecture the worlds on the dangers of terrorism before handing out a one star rating. I would contemplate it’s quite an honor for a film to be panned by the man who once trashed A Clockwork Orange, #46 on AFI’s list of 100 sizable American films.

Honestly, this isn’t the type of movie that will blow you away the first time you peep it. There are some comic parts, but you may be distracted with wondering why Stiller chose his wife to play the token hot woman. But, like any classic comedy, this is the type of movie that fair ages well. It’s not a masterpiece that will spark discussions like The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s probably not even the type of movie that you’d want to lie around and search for on a rainy day. But it’s a perfect background movie. You know, the type of movie that comes on TV and you slay up watching when you’re impartial killing time. Or the type of movie you can throw in for background noise when you have a few friends over.

The precise spot is as off-the-wall as they approach. An investigative reporter is looking into the life of male-models and eventually discovers a situation to brainwash Derek Zoolander and develop him into an assassin, all for the generous of the fashion industry. One of the funniest things about the movie is that the successful male models are played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson–who aren’t exactly elegant boys.

The comedy in the movie can be attractive hit or miss, but you never find the feeling that the guys are mailing in their performances; this one doesn’t suffer from a lack of worry. There are plenty of word gags reminiscent of Leslie Nielsen flicks. The movie has several appearances from well known actors like Jon Voight, Will Ferrell and David Duchovny, but what really carries it is the strength of the leading men: Wilson and Stiller. In the kill, it’s hard not to be at least mildly entertained. Any one who likes the stars should be pleased the movie.

I popped in this DVD very wary of how I would feel about an obsolete childhood accepted after years of not seeing it. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that the film is aloof a lot of fun. Yes, a lot of the effects (blue veil, etc.) are unconvincing and present their age, but geeeez, the movie’s almost 40 years used so what can you put a question to. This was a actual stunner in it’s day and Harryhausen’s stop-motion sequences peaceful outshine any dumb CGI attain in today’s cookie-cutter movies (objective ogle at the abominable fresh TV remake with all those cheesy computer effects — there’s no contest!) The skeleton battle is most famed, but I have a special fondness for Talos which was the first scene that caught my survey as a young kid on Saturday afternoon TV in the tedious 60’s. Pleased to scrutinize that “Jason” tranquil has it’s magic (along with some acceptable campiness) and the DVD is a nice presentation (there are some diminutive flaws to the print materials and grain in some scenes) . The Harryhausen interview (with John Landis) is spicy and the recent trailer is also included on the DVD.

I’ve reviewed quite a few films featuring the work of special effects artist Ray Harryhausen and found reasons to like them all, but Jason and the Argonauts (1963) features some of his most unbelievable effects, and is considered to be one of the greatest fantasy pictures ever made. Would I say it’s the greatest? No, but in terms of influencing many, including a majority of special effects artists in the business today, this film is a cinematic landmark, and deserves to be treated as such. Produced by long time Harryhausen collaborator Charles Schneer (The Valley of Gwangi, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans) and directed by Don Chaffey (One Million Years B.C., Pete’s Dragon), the film stars Todd Armstrong in his biggest role, but not his articulate, as that was dubbed over by Tim Turner, a British actor who did a lot of insist over work on film trailers, including the trailer for this film. Also appearing is Nancy Kovack (The Silencers), and a whole bunch of British actors including Gary Raymond (El Cid), Laurence Naismith (The Valley of Gwangi), Niall MacGinnis (Night of the Demon), Jack Gwillim (Patton), Nigel Green (Countess Dracula), and Honor Blackman (Goldfinger), to name a few.

As this fantasy memoir begins, we discover the quandary of Jason as an infant, his father slain and kingdom usurped, as so the seemingly fickle Gods have decided. Jason grows up, returns to re-take the land and peoples that are rightfully his, only to be sent on a quest, by the Gods (geez, who died and made them Gods? Oh yeah…they ARE Gods), to recover a golden fleece, one that would bring peace and prosperity to the disturbed land. Only pickle is the fleece is across the world, to where no one has sailed before. To meet this goal, Jason has the finest ship built, and gathers the greatest athletes Greece has to offer, and sets out on a unsafe plug that involves perilous waters, remarkable bronze titans, a deadly, multi-headed Hydra, an army of skeleton warriors (can seven really be considered an army? Maybe more like a task force…), and treachery within his maintain ranks, among other things (as if that wasn’t enough) . The quest seems an impossible one, but with Jason’s determination, the loyalty of his men (the non-treasonous ones, of course), and even a slight succor from the Gods themselves, he unbiased may be able to survive and return with the admire to reclaim what is rightfully his, and bring and slay to the tyrant reign that has plagued his lands for the past twenty curious years.

Alright, I will say some of the acting isn’t all that titanic (actress Kovack seems to be on some kind of depressant, as her performance is about as deadpan as I’ve seen), and some of the non-Harryhausen special effects are extremely noticeable (the matte usage in some scenes stands out a lot more than they probably would have liked), but despite these points, this is really a fun and interesting movie. There are elements of the myth missing (the 2000 television CGI-laden version starring Jason London was a bit more inclusive in this respect, but lacked the charm, for me at least, of this one), but the makers of this film did manage to cram a lot into its’ 104 diminutive running time, and the ample direction kept the tale challenging along at a rousing straggle, rarely slowing down, and keeping my interest. I did be pleased the sets (especially those on Mount Olympus, and I have to say, Honor Blackman makes for one sexy Goddess, playing Hera, Zeus’ wife…hotchie momma!) and the status shots where unbelievable, adding a lot to the anecdote. The Argo (the boat that carried Jason and his crew, hence the term `Argonauts’) was safe, although that figurehead of Hera (she was one of the Gods assisting Jason) freaked me out, especially with the opening an closing of its’ eyelids. And I can’t review this film without mentioning the work of legendary Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Day the Earth Stood Collected, Psycho, Taxi Driver) …well, I mentioned him…but seriously, it’s sparkling rare to collect a composer as `in tune’ with the material he’s working with as Herrmann (mediate how different Psycho would be without its’ repulsive acquire) . The best parts of the film, by far, are the stop-motion effects by Harryhausen. What makes his work so well-behaved, in my plan, is not only his search for for meticulous detail (it would often seize months to originate a 3 or 4 miniature on cover segment of stop-motion work), but also his ability to build the appropriate movements for the characters he was presenting. An example within the context of the film is Talos, the bronze titan, compared to, say, the winged harpies. The character of Talos moved exactly how you would interrogate a giant made of bronze to disappear, rigid, lumbering, and generally dead, compared to the very fluid and enchanting movements of the winged harpies, or even the multi-headed Hydra creature. It’s the supposition of how the creatures would depart, infused with the created models that site Harryhausen apart from his peers, and made him a memoir in his gain time, influencing so many others that came after him. It’s dazzling rare to notice stop-motion work in major films nowadays, as it’s been replaced with computer generated images (which is probably cheaper and less time spirited, but can often appear objective as unrealistic as lesser stop-motion work) .
